According to the country’s official news agency, Vietnam’s President Nguyen Xuan Phuc submitted his resignation after the ruling Communist Party found him responsible for violations and wrongdoing of numerous officials under him.
Phuc is 68 and he held the presidency position for less than two years.
Vietnam’s party’s powerful Central Committee said Phuc submitted an application to resign from his assigned positions, quit his job, and retire after being fully aware of his responsibilities before the party and the people.
Phuc’s resignation comes after the anti-corruption purge saw the dismal of two deputy prime ministers and the arrest of up to a dozen other officials this month.
Despite concerns the campaign is paralyzing routine transactions, Vietnam’s communist party is intensifying its fight against corruption.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son was also punished last month over the alleged involvement of several ministry officials and diplomats in the scandal over repatriation flights.
