Rached Ghannouchi, the opposition leader who was apprehended, has been moved to a hospital on Tuesday. This comes after the police raided his home and party headquarters the day before. According to Nejib Chebbi, who spoke to The Associated Press, neither he nor other lawyers have been informed about the rationale behind Ghannouchi’s transfer to La Marsa Hospital, nor have they been updated on his current state.
Ghannouchi is the most notable opponent of President Kais Saied, and he has been held for interrogation multiple times before. However, the conditions surrounding his most recent detention indicate that the situation is more severe this time.
Previously, Ghannouchi held the position of the speaker in Tunisia’s parliament. However, after Saied dissolved the parliament in July of last year and took control of most of the country’s executive powers, Ghannouchi and other adversaries have labeled the event as a coup.
He served as speaker of Tunisia’s parliament until Saied dissolved the body last July and seized most executive powers in the North African country — a move that Ghannouchi and other opponents call a coup.
