The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has revoked its membership in the Russian Chess Federation (RCF) for two years.
The Ethics Commission decided due to the inclusion of chess clubs from occupied Ukrainian territories – Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions – in the RCF’s membership.
Furthermore, the RCF’s failure to adhere to “political neutrality” and hosting competitions in these areas contributed to the decision.
The suspension stems from concerns over Russia’s actions in Ukraine, particularly its annexation of Crimea and involvement in the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
These actions have led to sanctions and diplomatic measures against Russia by various international bodies, including sports organizations.
Russian athletes and teams have been barred from participating in certain international competitions under their national flag. This suspension not only affects the athletes themselves but also has broader implications for Russia’s sporting reputation and influence on the global stage.
