After the Conservatives MPs having choose their final two candidates for the party leadership position, former Chancellor Rishi Sunak is set to go all out with the British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on who to be bestowed the right hand to lead the Conservatives and become the next British Prime Minister.
Following a rigorous last effort of seeking support from MPs, the struggle on selecting a new leader after the resignation of former PM Boris Johnson a few weeks back is reaching its final stage.
A report from Politico Europe shows that Rishi Sunak is up on the top list after securing the backing of 137 members in the fifth round of voting (up from 118 in the previous round), while Truss amassed the support of 113 members (up from 86).
Following behind Truss for the second position was Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt with 105 votes (up from 92 in the previous vote), but was later eliminated from the race.
The final contenders, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss will now go on to a wider vote of the Party’s rank-and-file members, with predictions in favor of Liz Truss despite the recent comfortable victory had by Sunak who was supported mostly by Tory lawmakers.
Antecedents have shown that both Sunak and Truss have held a high level of government post important positioning held important positions over the past decade even after her vote was in favor of Britain to remain in the EU during the Brexit referendum of 2016.
Sunak served as Boris Johnson’s Chancellor – his top finance minister and the second-most powerful job in the U.K. cabinet – until he dramatically resigned last month as part of the wider Conservative rebellion that called time on John son’s scandal-hit premiership, a report from Polito Europe said.
Both sides seeking to gain wider members have shaved for the PM position, and both have set out their aimed objectives and manifestoes that will serve the interest of all.
