US President Biden emphasizes hospital protection, urging less intrusive actions as pressure mounts for ceasefire internationally following relentless attacks on civilian structures by Israel.
In statement disclosed on Monday in White House, the US President Joe Biden call for calm in Israel attack on Gaza.
“My hope and expectation is that there will be less intrusive action relative to hospitals, and we remain in contact with the Israelis,” Biden told reporters at the White House.
“Also there is an effort to get this pause to deal with the release of prisoners and that’s being negotiated, as well, with the Qataris … being engaged,” he added.
“So I remain somewhat hopeful, but hospitals must be protected.”
Reports indicate Israeli tanks near Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital amid ongoing conflict. Israel claims the hospital sits above Hamas’ subterranean headquarters, a claim Hamas denies.
Israel asserts it isn’t targeting the hospital but vows to confront Hamas after an October 7 attack that killed over 1,200.
