Germany Defence Minister, Christine Lambrecht on Monday tendered a resignation letter to the German Chancellor to relieve her of her duty.
Lambrecht’s decision came as a result of increasing pressure on Germany to provide battle tanks to Ukraine, which was facing a war with Russia.
Before the increasing pressure as the Defence Minister, Lambrecht has been the subject of media criticism over their personal life.
She was recently attacked and blasted by leading German media who accused her of turning a deaf ear to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Lambrecht’s New Year video on social media where she expressed her special satisfaction as the German defence minister in 2022 against a backdrop of loud fireworks, was also backlashed by the Germans who accused her nonchalant attitude towards the war in Europe.
Christine Lambrecht in a statement disclosed that she has willingly resigned herself from the position on the approval of Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
“The months-long media focus on my person hardly allows for objective reporting and discussion about servicemen and women… and security policy decisions in the interest of Germany,” she said.
Other politicians from the leading government have also faced criticism for months over what critics say is Germany’s wavering response to the conflict in Ukraine.
Successor to Lambrecht remains unknown but senior SPD politicians are tipped to replace her, with the parliamentary commissioner on armed forces Eva Hoegl being the preferred candidate.
