Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated on Tuesday that Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s accusation of fascism against Israel is “absurd.” Scholz emphasized that Israel is a democracy, adheres to human rights and international law, and acts accordingly.
The comments were made in response to Erdogan’s assertion that Israel’s legitimacy is being questioned due to its own fascism.
Erdogan is scheduled to hold talks in Berlin with Chancellor Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, although the visit has sparked controversy over Erdogan’s accusations against Israel and his characterization of Hamas as “liberators.”
Despite the challenges, Scholz’s spokesperson emphasized the importance of dialogue with difficult partners to make progress on various issues.
