NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has agreed not to veto the military alliance assistance to Ukraine in its conflict against Russia.
Stoltenberg met with Orban in Budapest on Wednesday where both leaders finalized their stance on the conflict in Ukraine.
Jens Stoltenberg said NATO has accepted Orban’s decision to opt out of the alliance defense against Russia, saying it won’t veto any act of assistance to Ukraine.
The NATO Secretary General said he expects all allies to play a major role in providing assistance to Ukraine which will aid Kyiv at the war front and also change the tide of the war in Eastern Europe.
“Prime Minister Orban has made it clear that Hungary will not participate in these NATO efforts, and I accept this position”, Stoltenberg said.
Orban said Hungary will continue to abide by the decision of NATO in regards to military allocation of 2% of their GDP, but the EU election had reinforced his government mandate not to participate in military operations outside the NATO area.
Stoltenberg welcomed Orban’s decision, saying “The Prime Minister has assured me that Hungary will not oppose these efforts, enabling other allies to move forward, and he has confirmed that Hungary will continue to meet its NATO commitments in full.”
