Scientists, governments and the UN say the switch to renewable energy is important as the effects of climate change are already being felt around the world, including in Britain, which last year had its hottest year on record.
Gas remained the most used source of electricity last year, the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) said, but power from wind turbines continued to gain dominance.
That record was broken on December 30 when 20,918 GW was generated by wind turbines.
And the consumption of coal, the most carbon emissive fossil fuel continued to decline. In 2022 it generated only 1.5% of the electricity compared to 2012 when it was about 43%.
UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, in December 2022 agreed to ease restrictions that has prevented onshore wind turbines.
