The United Nations Security Council has issued a strong plea for the prompt and unconditional liberation of Niger’s democratically elected President, Mohammed Bazoum. The Security Council members expressed deep concerns and stressed the critical importance of ensuring the safety of President Bazoum, his family, and all government officials serving under his administration.
Prior to this, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, along with other prominent UN officials, had already echoed the call for the release of President Bazoum. The situation arose when a group of military officers in Niger took control of the national television network and announced a coup on Wednesday. As a result of this alarming development, President Bazoum was detained within his official residence in the capital city, Niamey.
It has been reported that the attempted coup lacked the full support of the entire military, but the head of the army publicly declared his backing for the insurgent move.
In response to this unfolding crisis, the international community, represented by the United Nations Security Council, stands united in urging for the immediate release of the democratically elected leader and the restoration of stability and democratic governance in Niger. The safety and well-being of President Bazoum, his family, and his government officials remain a top priority for the international community during this critical time.
