Heavy rainfall in Rwanda’s northern, western, and southern provinces last week caused significant 137 deaths and injuries.
Since heavy rainfall fell on Rwanda on May 2-3, causing landslides and deadly floods, the government began an emergency response, which included evacuations and temporary relocations to camps for the affected residents.
Rwandans also raised over 10 million Rwf in less than 24 hours to help those affected. Over 19,000 households in disaster-prone areas have been relocating urgently.
The Rwandan government’s deputy spokesperson outlined the country’s post-flood reconstruction plans.
Rwanda’s rugged terrain makes it more vulnerable to floods and landslides than other nations and has caused traumatic events in the past.
Residents who have been relocated to resettlement facilities and model villages demonstrate how their lives have improved, stressing the need for a paradigm shift among citizens who are reluctant to relocate from high-risk zones to safer locations.
