The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has instructed members to actively mobilize for nationwide compliance with the Nigerian labor unions’ strike directive.
In a notice signed by acting general secretary Dominic Igwebike on Monday, NUEE urged members to cease work from early Tuesday, potentially impacting electricity distribution and causing power outages.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) declared the strike in response to the assault on NLC president Joe Ajaero in Imo State on November 1. Despite a restraining order from the National Industrial Court on Friday, which halted the strike, the unions directed members to down tools nationwide from Tuesday.
The court order, issued in response to an ex-parte request by the Nigerian government through the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, aimed to prevent the labor unions from carrying out the scheduled strike beginning on November 14.
The presidency denounced the strike as illegal and unwarranted, labeling it a form of government blackmail.
