The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) have appealed to the Federal and State government to find a lasting solution to the continuous brain drain in the country’s health sector following a series of migration to other countries.
According to information from the NMA Chairman, Lagos Branch, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu on Wednesday said, the Nigerian health sector has been witnessing a great decline as a result of brain drain in the sector.
It was disclosed that over 1,800 health officials left the country for greener pastures in December 2022 as a result of the failing system in the country.
Appealing to government officials during a gubernatorial debate in Lagos, the NMA Chairman calls for government intervention before medicine as a profession goes into extinction if solutions are not proffered.
Dr. Olowojebutu declares that the health system is In a state of emergency as a result of the brain drain, disclosing that, in some hospitals in Lagos state, no specialties for health officials as there’s already a shortage of personnel.
The NMA urged the government to be deliberate about tackling the issues. Saying there’s pull and push syndrome causing doctors to leave the state.
