German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is set to disclose the country’s plan on sending battle tanks to Ukraine to the parliament after much pressure in weeks.
Germany is expected to decide on Wednesday during the afternoon parliament, with an announcement expected to be on approving the German-made Leopard tanks deployment to Ukraine.
Berlin will be making its decision finally after the US has also put in place a preliminary agreement to send Abrams tanks to help Kyiv in their counters offensive attack on Russia in eastern Ukraine.
The German coalition government welcome the new development ahead of an official announcement saying the news is a relief to the mistreated and brave Ukraine.
Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann of the Free Democratic Party said “The decision to approve (other countries’ requests) and supply the Leopard 2 was arduous but unavoidable.”
The German opposition parties have criticized the decision of the government, saying it’s an irresponsible and dangerous move.
They campaign against the deployment, saying Germany risks being drawn directly into the war as a result.
They urged the government not to prepare the ground for a third World War, as only sending tanks won’t achieve the peace they aimed for in Europe.
