Authorities on Mayotte, a french indian ocean island, began demolishing homes in a large slum on Monday in an attempt to demolish the village of Majicavo, early Monday morning as part of operation wuambushu (“take back” in the local language), which the french authorities first attempted to launch last month.
In anticipation of Monday’s demolition by the authorities, the affected families began picking up their valuables on Sunday.
In Mayotte, some 135 dwellings will be destroyed out of about 1,000 substandard homes.
Talus 2 was scheduled to be demolished on April 25, but it was postponed due to a court decision. The French state was allowed to proceed after two court decisions followed.
