Former Vice President of Nigeria and Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, convened a private meeting with key stakeholders, including some governors from the party, at his residence in Abuja.
The closed-door meeting saw the presence of prominent figures such as the acting National Chairman of the party, Umar Damagum, and the PDP vice presidential candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. Several state governors were also in attendance, namely Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State.
The gathering was prompted by the existing tensions within the PDP, stemming from the nomination of former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, as a minister by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government. This dispute between Wike, Atiku, and the PDP leadership has caused division within the party, leading to some governors boycotting the PDP presidential campaign.
Despite these internal challenges, the PDP leadership reportedly agreed to overlook the actions of certain G-5 governors who are in contact with President Bola Tinubu. The party intends to await the resolution of the case at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal before making any decisions concerning Wike’s actions.
The closed-door meeting marks an attempt by Atiku and other key figures to address the crisis within the PDP and find a way forward amid the growing tensions and disagreements.
