The Ukrainian government has pleaded to China to use its might to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt his invasion of Ukraine.
Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s foreign minister, asked his Chinese colleague in a phone call on Tuesday to leverage Beijing’s contacts with Moscow to stop Russia’s military invasion of its neighbor, according to a statement from the Ukrainian foreign ministry.
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi informed Kuleba, according to the statement, that Beijing was willing to go to any length to assist end the war through diplomacy.
Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation,” claiming that they are not intended to take territory but rather to damage Ukraine’s military capabilities and catch those it considers to be dangerous nationalists.
A move that has turned out to be Europe’s largest insurgent since World War II.
China, which has grown closer to Moscow in recent years while maintaining warm diplomatic relations and significant trading connections with Ukraine, has declined to denounce Russia’s invasion of the country.
