Over 50,000 people and 4,000 homes were saved from demolition by the Indian Supreme Court on land belonging to the railways in Haldwani town in Uttarakhand.
The court says that over 50,000 people can’t be uprooted overnight, as it recommended a need for rehabilitation while recognizing the need for the railroads.
More than 50,000 people, most of them Muslims, were relieved after the court ruling.
Hundreds of women had been holding sit-in protests against eviction for more than a week after the high court of the northern state declared 4,365 houses adjacent to the railway line in Haldwani’s Banbhulpura colony illegal and therefore to be demolished.
