The Federal High Court in Kano has invalidated all measures taken by the Kano state government to abolish the Kano Emirates Council Law. This follows the Kano House of Assembly’s repeal of the law, which Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf then enforced by removing Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero from his position as Emir of Kano.
The Governor also reversed the creation of four emirates—Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya—and removed the Emirs appointed by his predecessor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Furthermore, the law was utilized to reinstate Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was deposed by Ganduje in 2020, as the 16th Emir of Kano.
However, Aminu Babba Danagundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, and a kingmaker in the former Kano emirate contested the validity of the law. Represented by his counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), he petitioned the court to declare it null and void.
In a ruling delivered on Thursday, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman overturned the actions of the Kano government and instructed all parties to maintain the existing state of affairs.
