Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) expressed his concerns on Sunday, stating that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is contemplating the idea of initiating an impeachment inquiry into President Biden as a way to address the most extreme members of his conference.
Schiff warned that this move might set off an unstoppable chain of events. He criticized McCarthy’s short-term focus on retaining his speakership, suggesting that such actions could have serious consequences for the country.
McCarthy had previously mentioned expectations of House GOP investigations into Biden family’s foreign business activities rising to the level of an impeachment inquiry.
However, Schiff noted the lack of clarity on whom the House GOP intends to impeach and what grounds they would use, as they have mentioned various individuals, including Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, Attorney General Merrick Garland, and now President Biden.
Schiff considers these “faux investigations” and the potential misuse of impeachment power to be detrimental to the nation.
