President Zelensky of Ukraine says that his country is submitting an accelerated application to join NATO after president Putin of Russia signed an agreement with leaders of 4 regions of Ukraine to join Russia on Friday.
“We are taking a decisive step by signing Ukraine’s application for accelerated accession to NATO”, president Zelensky said while on camera outside.
But accession to NATO is a long process requiring unanimous approval of all 30 member states of the alliance.
If you remember in February of 2022, Russia demanded guarantees from the west that ” Ukraine will never join NATO” which the west failed to respond to leading to Putin announcing a special military operation in Ukraine to demilitarize the country so that it will never pose a threat to Russia and prevent it from ever joining NATO.
With the current situation, I don’t think NATO can quickly accept Ukraine’s request to join the alliance due to fear of starting a war with Russia that would not only destroy Europe but also the whole world.
