Abubakar Aliyu, the Minister of Power, declared yesterday that Nigeria’s Electricity rate is the lowest in the world.
Despite the low cost of electricity and the government’s attempts to make electricity available to Nigerians, many consumers, especially government departments, defaulted on bill payments, according to him.
On Thursday, he addressed the Senate committee on power and the heads of various agencies in the power industry in Abuja, during an interactive meeting.
“in Nigeria, the cost of electricity is the lowest across the globe, particularly in terms of gas to power, which is heavily subsidized,” he said.
Sulyman Abdulaziz, the managing director of the transmission company of Nigeria, said the high rate of default in payment of electricity bills by critical government departments led to the disconnection of electricity distribution companies(DISCO) in Kaduna and Kano from the National grid recently.
