Mexican Armed Forces on Thursday arrested son of jailed drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, scoring a high-profile win in the fight against powerful cartels days before US President Joe Biden visits.
Ovidio Guzman, was arrested in the northwestern city of Culiacan and he is accused of leading a faction of his father’s notorious Sinaloa cartel.
Ovidio Guzman was once arrested before in 2019, but security forces released him after his cartel waged an all-out war in response.
The Sinaloa state government has urged residents to stay at home on Thursday following the recent arrest.
Mexico has recorded more than 340,000 murders since the government deployed the army to fight drug cartels in 2006, most of them been carried out by criminal gangs.
