Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima, aged 51, and nine others died in a plane crash on Monday. The aircraft vanished when it couldn’t land in Mzuzu due to bad weather, despite attempts to return to the capital, Lilongwe.
Malawi’s President, Lazarus Chakwera, addressing the nation, stated, “The search and rescue team have found the aircraft destroyed with no survivors, as all passengers on board were killed on impact.”
He expressed his deep sorrow, stating that words couldn’t capture the heartbreak. Describing the incident as a “tragedy,” he conveyed the immense sadness felt.
Photographs, shared with newsmen by a member of the military rescue team, showed army personnel standing on a foggy slope near debris bearing the registration number of the Malawi Army Air Wing Dornier 228-202K aircraft.
Rescuers had been combing a fog-covered forest south of Mzuzu on Tuesday after authorities pinpointed the last tower the plane communicated with before disappearing.
