A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Loboyacu, Datem del Marañón Province, Loreto, Peru, at 9:22 pm local time on Monday, June 17, 2024, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
The quake’s epicenter was recorded at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes typically produce stronger shaking than deeper ones due to their proximity to the surface. Seismologists may revise the exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth as they analyze more data and receive reports from other agencies.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) also reported the quake as a magnitude 5.8.
Preliminary seismic data suggests the earthquake was widely felt in the epicenter region and may have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking likely occurred in Loboyacu (population 220), located 21 km from the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Barranca (population 5,800), situated 121 km away.
