Israel Ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan during an interview reacted to the UN ceasefire proposal, saying Hamas need to appeal for an end to the conflict.
The UNSC on Monday adopted the ceasefire proposal facilitated by U.S. President Joe Biden where he emphasized a three-phase deal that will ultimately end the conflict between Gaza and Israel.
14 members of the UNSC adopted the motion with Russia abstaining from the vote.
Speaking over the development, Erdan said, Israel has accepted the peace deal proposal but expressed concern about how it will be interpreted by Hamas.
“We accepted the outline of the deal, but we had our concerns about the way it would be interpreted by Hamas.
Phase 1 calls for the release of women and elderly people held by Hamas. Moving to phase 2, it depends on an agreement between the parties to end hostilities.
One of our conditions is the future of Gaza. We can’t agree to Hamas continuing to be the rulers of Gaza”, Erdan argued.
He described the future of Gaza as an important aspect of the people of Israel, saying they’ll continue to assert ownership of Gaza from Hamas who have continued to rebel against them.
