In Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, protesters and police have fought after the legislature approved a contentious draft law that critics claim restricts press freedom and stifles civil society.
Crowds gathered outside the parliament building were dispersed by riot police using water cannons and pepper spray.
When others hoisted the EU and Georgian flags, some demonstrators were spotted coughing and collapsing to the ground.
According to the authorities, 50 police officers suffered injuries, and equipment was harmed.
66 people were detained by the police, including Zurab Japaridze, a prominent member of Georgia’s opposition who was allegedly beaten.
There has been substantial international opposition of the bill. Non-governmental and media organizations would have to disclose themselves as “foreign agents” or risk steep fines and possibly even incarceration if they receive more than 20% of their financing from overseas.
