At least 95 people have died as a result of heavy rainfall that caused floods and landslides in western Rwanda, according to a senior government official who was on Wednesday visiting authorities for others who are trapped in their homes.
In a video clip posted on Twitter by the state-run Rwanda broadcasting agency, mud water rushed quickly down an inundated road and destroyed houses.
The Rwanda meteorology agency expects rainfall in May that would be higher than the national average for the East African nation. The rain started at 6 p.m. (1600 GMT) on Tuesday, according to Habitegeko, and the river sebeya had burst its banks.
“The soil was already soaked from the previous days of rain, which caused landslides that closed off roads,” he said.
