After his administration survived a no-confidence vote in parliament over a wildly unpopular pension reform, France President Emmanuel Macron will break his quiet on Wednesday to lay out his objectives, a government official said.
In the hours following the narrow victory of Macron’s government in the parliamentary vote, unannounced protests broke out around the nation, according to police, and more than 200 individuals were detained.
For Macron, the vote’s failure will be a relief. If it had been successful, it would have brought down his government and prevented the law from passing that would have raised the retirement age to 64 by two years.
