Yusra Ghannouchi, the daughter of detained Tunisia’s opposition leader Rached Ghannouchi, has condemned her father’s detention, citing a gross human rights violation by the new regime of President Kais Saied.
She is requesting the immediate release of her loved ones, along with other family members of Tunisian opposition figures detained in a government crackdown, in a lawsuit brought to the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Since April 17, Ghannouchi, 81, has been jailed for alleging that if left-wing parties or those of political Islam such as ennahdha were eliminated, Tunisia would be threatened with a “civil war.”
More than 20 political opponents and other figures have been arrested by the authorities since early February, an act that has been chastised by the international community and human rights organizations.
With the detainees allegedly tortured, the affected parties have reported allegations of bullying to the lawyers representing the victims.
