The disastrous Cyclone Freddy that struck Malawi had led to flooding and landslides in the Southern African Nation have led to the death of more than 240 people across two nations, despite rescuers’ effort on Wednesday to reach survivors in Malawi’s damaged capital of Blantyre.
After days of torrential rain, the weather was forecast to improve as the storm moved away from the land. But, isolated thunderstorms will continue, and water levels remained high in certain locations, impeding rescue attempts.
The number of fatalities has increased from 190 to 225, with 707 people injured and 41 reported missing, according to the Malawi disaster management office.
Felix Washon, a spokesman for the Red Cross in Malawi, told AFP that they have been hauling people from buildings and trees.
