A Federal High Court in Kano has granted Emir Aminu Ado Bayero N10 million in compensation following an order for his arrest and eviction from the palace.
Last month, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf dethroned Ado Bayero and demanded he relinquish power within 48 hours.
Upon returning to Kano, Ado Bayero, who was away when the order was issued, relocated to the mini palace in Nasarawa. Governor Yusuf, displeased with this move, promptly ordered his arrest.
The 15th Emir of Kano took legal action to contest Yusuf’s decision. Ado Bayero sought to invalidate the law used by the governor to depose him and restore Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.
Justice Simon Amobeda delivered the judgment on Friday, affirming that his court had jurisdiction to hear and entertain the matter, which involved a fundamental rights enforcement application.
The respondents in the suit included the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Attorney General of Kano State, the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Commissioner of Police in Kano, the State Security Service (SSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Air Force, and the Nigerian Navy.
The court decided against ordering Sanusi’s eviction from the Gidan Rumfa palace. Ibrahim Isa Wangida, representing both the Kano state government and Sanusi, described the judgment as a victory for the emir and his supporters, as the court upheld the law that reinstated Sanusi.
