The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has stated that it has no intention of revoking the licenses of additional Deposit Money Banks (DMBs).
Mrs. Hakama Sidi-Ali, the Acting Director of Corporate Communications at the apex bank, made this announcement in a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja.
Sidi-Ali’s statement addressed speculations in certain circles about potential license revocations for Unity, Keystone, and Polaris banks, prompted by the recent withdrawal of Heritage Bank’s operating license on Monday.
She mentioned Commercial, Merchant, and Non-Interest Banks (CMNIBs), stating that these plans were presently under review by the apex bank.
She explained that besides strengthening buffers to endure economic downturns, the proactive step taken by the CBN to mandate CMNIBs to recapitalize would lead to a bolstered capital base for Nigeria’s banks.
Remember that on Monday, the CBN declared the immediate revocation of Heritage Bank Plc’s license.
