According to Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, an impartial special rapporteur will look into claims that China meddled in recent elections.
The designated investigator will examine classified reports regarding the federal elections in 2019 and 2021 and offer recommendations for further elections.
Leaders of opposing political parties have demanded a public investigation.
China has denied any electoral involvement, calling the charges “purely unfounded and slanderous”.
Speaking to reporters on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Monday, Mr Trudeau said the claims undermining Canada’s “sovereignty” are disturbing, and “strike us to our very heart as Canadians”.
“I will be appointing an independent special rapporteur, who will have a wide mandate and make expert recommendations on combating interference and strengthening our democracy,” Mr Trudeau said.
He stated that the appointment of the rapporteur has not yet been made and will be made in the upcoming days.
Additionally, Mr. Trudeau stated that he would request that the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (Nsicop) conduct an investigation into foreign involvement and submit its findings to parliament.
He continued by saying that Canada has long been aware of China’s, Iran’s, and Russia’s attempts at involvement.
