Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been tipped as a potential candidate to fill the vacuum of NATO’s next Secretary general position should the post become vacant next year.
Jens Stoltenberg is presumed to leave the leadership position of the military alliances after having taken the position on 1, October 2014, and was also nominated for the second term in 2018 till the present.
Reports have suggested that Jens Stoltenberg would be leaving the position anytime sooner, and Mr. Johnson is among the long list of British politicians who are likely to emerge.
On the list are also former British prime minister David Cameron, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace and Theresa May are potential candidates for the post. Boris Johnson another new name on the list will be relieved of his prime minister post whom he is holding temporarily till September 6.
Boris Johnson has been one of the leading Western leaders who have been actively active in Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, he had also sanctioned some major Russian Oligarch’s property in Britain, most notably former Chelsea owner Roman Abrahimovic.
Reports from The Telegraph have suggested that the majority of the Conservative leaders endorse Boris Johnson as the likable candidate for the position. David Jones, a former Brexit minister said “Boris has led the Western response to Putin. It was Boris who went to Sweden and Finland and urged the leaders of both countries to make applications for NATO membership which of course they did.”
Richard Drax MP, a senior Conservative member of the defense select committee, said he would support the Prime Minister for the role if he wanted it.”
Mark Francois MP, added that “people will probably argue over Boris Johnson’s legacy for years – but one thing which is inarguable is his absolute staunch support for Ukraine in the face of Russian barbarity.”
Mr. Goncharenko also attested to Boris’s contribution against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine saying “he would be the right person to take over from Jens Stoltenberg as he understands the challenges that NATO and the West face”.
