“Avatar: The Way of Water” continues to break records at the global box office, becoming the sixth film to surpass $2 billion in worldwide receipts.
Directed by James Cameron, the film now sits ahead of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Jurassic World” on the list of highest-grossing films and is predicted to overtake “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to reach fourth place.
This would mean Cameron has directed three of the top four films of all time, with the original “Avatar” at number one with $2.9 billion and “Titanic” at number three with $2.2 billion.
The film’s success has been driven by a strong performance outside the US, including being the all-time highest-grossing film in several countries, and the biggest Hollywood film in India.
Some estimates predict the film’s final haul could reach $2.5 billion, potentially overtaking “Titanic” for third place
