George Pell, who was also a former treasurer of the Vatican and the most senior member of the Catholic clergy to be convicted of child sex abuse before his convictions were over, died at the age of 81.
According to his private secretary, Pell died in Rome on Tuesday.
Pell served as the archbishop of Melbourne and the archbishop of Sydney and was once the third-highest-ranked Catholic in the Vatican.
Pell died from heart complications following hip surgery, according to Archbishop Peter Comensoli.
Pell served as the Vatican’s economy minister from 2014 until he took a leave of absence in 2017.
Pell spent 13 months in prison in Australia due to sexual abuse.
Pell also attended the funeral of Pope Benedict XVI last week.
