As other nations rushed to assist their people in escaping deadly conflict between opposing generals, US forces swooped in on helicopters to remove embassy personnel from Sudan’s battle-torn capital, President Joe Biden revealed Sunday.
On Sunday, France also began evacuation efforts from the country in northeast Africa, where combat has now lasted for two weeks.
More than 400 people have been killed and tens of thousands injured in brutal clashes between the Sudanese army and a paramilitary organization, which have included bombings by fighter jets and street fighting with tanks in heavily populated Khartoum.
In his appeal for a rapid ceasefire and condemnation of the bloody bloodshed, Biden said that the US military “conducted an operation” to remove US government officials.
