Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, stated on Sunday that Senegal should organize elections as soon as possible, ensuring transparency, peace, and national harmony.
The African Union (AU) has stated that Senegal should organize a presidential election as soon as they can. This comes after President Macky Sall postponed the scheduled vote on February 25th to a date that has not been determined yet.
Senegal has never postponed a presidential election before, but President Sall’s recent announcement has caused uncertainty about the country’s constitutional procedures. Some opposition parties and civil society organizations have criticized it as an “institutional coup.”
The statement also emphasized that the AU strongly urges all political and social groups to resolve any political disagreements through peaceful discussions, understanding, and dialogue.
Senegal’s lawmakers are set to discuss on Monday a proposal to schedule the presidential vote for August 25th. The bill also suggests that President Sall should remain in power until his successor is officially installed.
