Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has commuted the sentences of 12 death row inmates who had been waiting to die for 25 years.
This information may be found in a statement made on Tuesday in Kano by Musbahu Kofar-Nassarawa, spokesman for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NIS), Kano State Command.
According to Kofar-Nassarawa, the governor also remitted six prisoners’ death sentences to life in prison.
“Ganduje also commuted the sentences of four female prisoners serving lengthy sentences for good behavior and diligence, as suggested by the correctional administration.
He claimed that in order to help the released prisoners get back in touch with their families, “he provided them each N5,000 as transportation costs.”
