The Senegal government reported that 40 people died and 85 were injured when two buses smashed in a head-on collision overnight on an arterial road in Senegal’s central Kaffrine region.
The statement said the incident happened around 0330 GMT.
Public prosecutor, Cheikh Dieng, said in a statement that early investigations suggested a public passenger bus suffered a burst tire and swerved off course. It then crashed “head-on with another bus coming in the opposite direction,” he said.
The governor and local leaders officials visited the scene after the incident occurred, and president Sall’s government authority declares that it will establish road safety measures in the country.
President Macky Sall extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.
