The Poland National Team, considered underdogs, approaches Sunday’s Euro 2024 opening clash against the Netherlands with optimism. Despite the absence of prolific striker Robert Lewandowski due to a hamstring injury and a tough qualifying campaign, they remain confident in their chances of victory.
The 35-year-old, who has scored 82 goals in 150 internationals, will be on the bench but is still in contention for Poland’s other Group D matches against Austria and France.
“Unfortunately, Robert Lewandowski can’t join us for this match,” expressed midfielder and acting captain Piotr Zielinski on Saturday, following a training session at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion, where the game kicks off at 3 p.m. (1400 GMT).
“He’s a top-tier player, and his absence will be felt. However, whether it’s me or my teammates, we’ll contribute extra to reach our goal, which is to secure a victory.”
Coach Michal Probierz stated that his third game without Lewandowski presented an opportunity for other players to stand out amidst a generational shift within the Polish squad.
