Germany overwhelmed 10-man Scotland with a 5-1 victory as the Euro 2024 hosts launched the tournament grandly in Munich on Friday, beginning their quest for a record fourth continental title.
Florian Wirtz opened the scoring 10 minutes into the match, followed shortly by Jamal Musiala’s powerful strike to double Germany’s lead.
Scotland’s highly anticipated night turned disastrous before halftime when Ryan Porteous received a red card for a two-footed challenge on Ilkay Gundogan. Kai Havertz converted the ensuing penalty.
Substitute Niclas Fuellkrug added a fourth goal midway through the second half. Although an own goal by Antonio Ruediger late in the game slightly marred the scoreboard, it did not diminish Germany’s dominant performance.
In the final moments, Emre Can capped off the match with a fifth goal, sealing an impressive start to Germany’s Euro 2024 campaign.
