Slovakia’s populist Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times in Handlova on Wednesday, approximately 150 kilometers northeast of the capital. Fico remained conscious upon arrival at Handlova hospital.
Medical personnel promptly treated his gunshot wounds and successfully stabilized his vital signs. Government sources, quoted by AFP, report that the Prime Minister is in a life-threatening condition.
The situation remains tense as authorities closely monitor his health.
Parliamentary Confirmation: Lubos Blaha, the deputy speaker of parliament, confirmed the incident during a parliamentary session.
The session was adjourned indefinitely in response to the shocking news. A Reuters witness near the scene in Handlova reported hearing several shots fired. Police swiftly detained a man at the location, and security officials ushered someone into a car and drove away.
