The US government has warned Ukraine to intensify its fight against corruption in the country, saying an inability to curb the growing corruption could affect the country’s support both economically and financially in the future.
The US government through its Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed dissatisfaction with Ukraine on handling the rise of corruption in the administration.
Blinken during a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky last month focused on the administration’s handling of the war against corruption, identifying corruption as a major impediment to Ukraine’s victory at the war front.
Blinken added that “winning on the battlefield will prevent Ukraine from becoming part of Russia. Winning the war against corruption will keep Ukraine from becoming like Russia. “
While the United States expressed worry over Ukraine’s massive corruption, the European Commission also expressed doubt in the country’s ability to properly manage foreign aid and announced the creation of a special watchdog to prevent mismanagement and embezzlement of foreign aid provided to Ukraine.
A top Ukrainian official said the administration is fighting rigorously to battle corruption as much as their soldiers are making efforts to stop the Russian soldiers at the war front.
The head of the dedicated unit within Ukraine’s prosecutor’s office, Alexander Klimenko stressed that, though the number of corruption cases has doubled that doesn’t indicate that there is twice as much corruption in the country.
