Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has vowed to retaliate against the European Union following the imposition of a substantial fine amounting to 200 million euros.
The fine was levied as a consequence of Hungary’s refusal to comply with EU mandates regarding the acceptance of refugees. Orbán, known for his staunchly nationalist and anti-immigration stance, has frequently clashed with the EU over its migration policies.
In a defiant speech, Orbán characterized the fine as unjust and politically motivated, asserting that Hungary is being penalized for prioritizing its sovereignty and the security of its borders. He argued that the EU’s refugee policies undermine national interests and ignore the will of the Hungarian people.
Orbán’s promise of revenge suggests potential countermeasures that could escalate tensions between Hungary and the EU.
“We will find a way to make Brussels suffer more than we do,” the Prime Minister declared.
The measures could include obstructing EU policy initiatives, leveraging Hungary’s veto power in key decisions, or forming alliances with other EU member states that share his critical views on migration and Brussels’ authority.
The European court previously fined Hungary for violating asylum rules for migrants. Additionally, Budapest was ordered to pay 1 million euros for each day of delay in complying with the ruling.
