Iran has criticized Canada’s decision to label the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, calling it “an unwise and unconventional politically-motivated step,” according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani, as reported by the semi-official Fars news agency on Thursday.
“Canada’s action will not impact the Revolutionary Guards’ legitimate and deterrent power,” Kanaani stated, adding that Tehran reserves the right to respond appropriately to the designation.
Canada designated the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization on Wednesday, a move that could prompt investigations into former senior Iranian officials residing in the country.
The United States made a similar designation in 2019, accusing the Revolutionary Guards of conducting a global terrorist campaign.
Tehran denies these allegations, asserting that the elite force is a sovereign institution tasked with safeguarding national security.
