Miriam Onuoha, a future member of the House of Representatives, has entered the contest for Speaker of the upcoming 10th National Assembly in Nigeria
At a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the incumbent House member formally announced her desire to be speaker.
The first woman to openly register her candidacy for the position is Onuoha, who is running for the Onuimo/Isiala Mbano/Okigwe Federal Constituency in Imo State on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Having won reelection to the House for a second term, the lawmaker is the second representative from the South-East geopolitical zone to enter the contest after Kalu of Abia State, who serves as the chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs.
