Former Japan PM Shinjo Abe has been confirmed dead by the government of Japan at a hospital in Kashihara city, where he was receiving medical treatment, reported by a Jiji news broadcast.
The former PM was allegedly shot while campaigning for a parliamentary election in the city of Nara and was quickly airlifted to hospital for immediate medical attention before being pronounced dead, local media report.
The attack has prompted international condemnation by leaders worldwide, while the security personnel has swift into action, arresting a man suspected of carrying out the shooting.
Shinzo Abe was Japan’s longest-serving PM, he first served as Japan’s Prime Minister and President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020 breaking the record of the longest-serving in Japanese history.
