US sources claim that the Taliban, who currently rule Afghanistan, have murdered the mastermind of the Islamic State group who is believed to have plotted the fatal 2021 attack at Kabul Airport.
In the bombing in August, which occurred as the Taliban seized power, 170 civilians and 13 US soldiers were murdered.
US authorities told BBC news partner CBS that although the IS official was murdered weeks before, it took time to confirm his demise.
His identity has not been made public.
US officials claimed they had discovered the leader’s death through information collecting and monitoring of the area, but they did not elaborate on how they had discovered he was guilty for the bombing.
